‘ER’ Finale Gives the Show a Proper Send-Off
ER ended its 15 season run last night in a "business as usual" kind of way, leaving us with a mix of the old and the new and paying homage to the some of the greatest series moments.
-
The return of the opening credits which blended the current and former casts!
-
The throwbacks to the pilot: Lydia coming to wake Dr. Morris was nearly word for word the same scene from the pilot where she wakes Dr. Greene; Dr. Brenner’s speech to Dr.
Rory GilmoreWise in the lounge was reminiscent of a scene between Greene and Carter; Carter asking "Dr." Greene (Rachel, that is) if she was coming, It turned the student into the mentor and made the series come full circle (and many others I am sure I will catch upon a second viewing). -
The old cast together (I especially loved that they included Reese, using the same actor who had portrayed him as a toddler).
-
The opportunity for the viewers to decide for themselves what happened to the characters. For instance, we don’t know if Carter and Kem will get back together. For those of us who hate that relationship, we can assume that they broke up and Carter went back to work at County. For the two or three of you who might have liked them together, you can assume their lunch was a new beginning for them.
-
The significance of the camera pulling away and leaving County General in a way we have never seen before – as if we were walking away from the hospital, leaving the staff and patients to go on about their lives…just without us.
What I didn’t like:
-
Dr.
Rory GilmoreWise. I’m sure there was supposed to be some significance to showing a med student that we had never met, but I thought it was somewhat pointless. There were plenty of med students whom we had already come to know who could have handled that storyline. -
Though I LOVED having all of the old cast there, I felt that the current cast was somewhat robbed of having some closure brought to their current storylines.
-
Kem. ‘Nuff said. Never liked her, never will.
All in all, I think it was an excellent way to end the show. It may not have been the best series finale in history, but it was a proper end to a history-making show. I am looking forward to this final season on DVD and hope that there is much, much more of the reminiscing than what was seen in the retrospective.
What did you think of the finale? Weigh in and give us your opinion!
(Edited to add in video of the opening credits in case you missed them!)
