Review: Heroes Episode 3.25 – An Invisible Thread
Maybe it was the high from the outstanding Chuck season finale (which I’ll have some thoughts on a bit later), but I came away disappointed in the Season 3 wrap we saw from Heroes last night.
Let me preface this review by saying that I am a die-hard Heroes fan. I love the concept of the show and I have stuck by it through all of the bad reviews from this season and last. I always expected this less-than-stellar season to pay off big in the end. But last night, for the first time, I felt really disappointed in the show.
Everything, with the exception of Zachary Quinto’s Sylar, seemed forced and as unnatural as Claire’s horrible wig. Things that should have worked didn’t and things that should have been shocking just weren’t.
What was wrong:
So much was wrong, but here are a few things that stand out in my mind…
-
Leaving us in the hallway as Nathan and Peter went in to fight Sylar. I realize they are being forced to trim the budget, but please, Claire’s eyeball is all we get to see in a major fight scene like that? Lame.
-
Cristine Rose’s scream as she found Nathan, while impressively crazy, just seemed silly when paired with her facial expression and reaction. What happened there? I love Cristine but this wasn’t her best moment.
-
The naiveté of Company veterans HRG and Angela, putting Sylar right where he wanted to be – in a position of power with easy access to the president. Don’t they realize that Sylar’s strong personality will eventually come back? These people are too smart for something like this. Why not let Peter shapeshift in to Nathan until he gets everything worked out? Wouldn’t that have been safer? No brainwashing needed.
-
Not going ahead to kill off somebody…for good. Yes, I know Nathan met his demise, but we’ll still have Adrian Pasdar around so they didn’t trim the cast that way. It seemed like they were setting Hiro up to die, but he didn’t. Tracy’s back, and with potential, but it still seems like we have the whole “death is not permanent” problem. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish anyone from the cast to be gone – I love them all – but for the show to move forward and streamline like it needs to, I think they are going to have to make some hard decisions and cut some of the actors. Yes, inevitably some fans will be upset but I think if it could payoff for the show, they would get over it.
-
Hiring Jack Coleman and Zachary Quinto in Season 1. They never fail to own the scenes they are in.
-
Leaving Danko alive. I think Danko has the potential to become a great force in the show – think first season HRG. Now that he’s had his brush with Sylar, he could be motivated to become an agent for the new Company.
-
Setting up Volume 5. It should be interesting to see the evolution of Sythan as he slowly realizes that something isn’t right. And Tracy’s quest to take down all of the agents from Building 26 could turn out to be a decent storyline.
What they did right:
The big question is, will the show be able to pull it off? Can they recover from this season and, more importantly, will people still be watching as they try?
That said, I’m still in. I will be until the end of the show. I’m loyal like that. I just hope they can get back to what hooked us all in the first season.

Alright, my biggest problem with this episode, which I just watched fifteen minutes or so ago.
Is it just me, or has everyone conveniently forgotten that Claire’s blood will heal people? Even Mr. Bennett, who was resurrected by this method from a bullet to the brain, seems to have conveniently forgotten that they can simply bring Claire up and heal Nathan, instead of going through all this unecessary drama with a mind-wiped Sylar, which is never going to work.
Frankly, I expected better from Heroes, as I usually very much enjoy their unusual story.

Not just they didn’t showed the fight. They didn’t showed it AGAIN. Just like the lame one in the S1 finale, the one behind the door on Five Years Gone, and well, there was barely any fighting in Powerless. Should’ve used another way to “reconstruct” Tracy than that, I suppose very costly, water-to-human effect. And that’s digital; a fight with Nathan, Peter and Sylar would be just wire work (as the Petrelli’s just fly), and some digital effects with Sylar…

Sorry, I just hate we were cheated out of a fight again.
