Fringe Gets Full Second Season Pickup

The following is a press release from FOX announcing that they have renewed Fringe for a full second season:

FOX has renewed FRINGE, the No. 1 new series among Adults 18-49, with a full second season, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.

“FRINGE proved to be a notable addition to our schedule all season and it really has fans buzzing as it builds to a fantastic season finale,” said Reilly. “J.J. and the whole Bad Robot team have been phenomenal partners, and we look forward to years of making great television with them.”

“FRINGE continues to gain momentum, creatively and with viewers,” said J.J. Abrams, series co-creator and executive producer. “We couldn’t be more thrilled that FRINGE will continue to freak people out for at least another season!”

FRINGE has captivated audiences this season, winning its Tuesday time period weekly among key demographics and ranks as the No. 1 new series in primetime among Adults 18-49.

Questions will be answered when the first season of FRINGE wraps up with two all-new episodes. First, on Tuesday, May 5 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT), Olivia experiences “awake dreams,” Walter divulges key information about the Z.F.T. manifesto and Peter reveals a secret that yields unexpected results in a disturbing case. In the climactic finale airing Tuesday, May 12 (9:04-10:00 PM ET/PT), discoveries are made, loyalties are tested, otherworldly origins are discovered and guest star Leonard Nimoy debuts as a pivotal person of interest.

Created by J.J. Abrams & Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, FRINGE stars Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Kirk Acevedo, Blair Brown and Jasika Nicole. The series is produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Abrams, Jeff Pinkner, Bryan Burk and J.H. Wyman serve as executive producers, while Kurtzman and Orci are consulting producers. Additionally, Pinkner and Wyman serve as the series’ showrunners.

Leonard Nimoy on Fringe - and Transformers?

120_morethanone_097 Leonard Nimoy recently spoke with SCI FI Wire about his upcoming role on Fringe as the mysterious William Bell.  He also addressed the rumors that he may provide a voice for the upcoming Transformers sequel, Revenge of the Fallen. Here’s what he had to say:

J.J. Abrams, who directed you in Star Trek, phoned and extended the invitation to guest-star on Fringe. Give us the setup of "There’s More Than One of Everything."

Nimoy: It’s one scene. It’s the final scene of the episode, in which I appear with Olivia, with Anna Torv’s character. It’s very brief, but I think interesting, entertaining and there’s enough given in the scene to whet your appetite, that you’ll want to see more of this relationship and what it’s all about. You’ll want to know what it is he has in mind with Olivia, what he wants or needs her for, why he wants to see her, what their past history is about and where they’re going together. What are they planning to do? What are his intentions? All of that is yet to come, and I think there’s going to be some very interesting storytelling.

Spoilers for the Final Season 1 Fringe Episodes

From E! Online’s Kristin:

Countdown to Finale: Expect the final three episodes to blow out the show as you’ve known it so far. Says executive producer Roberto Orci: "We were saving so many juicy secrets for years and years, and we’re actually going to stick a bunch of them in the finale. That may be the worst idea ever, but we’re doing it." According to Anna Torv, all sorts of nooks and crannies of the show’s mythology will be explored: "The last couple of episodes are very exciting. You get to the bottom of Harris (Michael Gaston)—there are a couple of surprises—and Jones (Jared Harris) comes back, and you find out something that I didn’t expect. And we meet William Bell!" But according to Josh Jackson, the final eps are really all about Ms. Olivia: "The episodes that we’re in right now are about clarifying why it is that Olivia is so important to the FBI and understanding why Olivia specifically—not any other cop—got chosen for that job."

Fringe Highlights from PaleyFest

FringeatPaley

At the Paley Festival last night, audiences were treated to a screening of The Transformation and a Q&A with the cast and producers.  Here are some highlights:

  • Joshua Jackson - “I would rather be a part of a show that aims for best-ever and comes in second-best-ever, than aims for mediocrity and achieves its goal and I think that’s what a lot of television does.” (followed by applause from the crowd)

  • On Leonard Nimoy being cast on the show to play the mysterious William Bell, Fringe co-creator J.J. Abrams described Nimoy’s arc as including multiple episodes – “not as a regular, but part of the cast…He hasn’t signed up for just one episode, I’m not going to say how many,” Abrams said. “Working with him was intimidating and wonderful [on Star Trek]. It didn’t even occur to me I would get to work with him again.”

  • On whether the show’s iconic title cards such (as a leaf or apple) actual mean anything (which fans have already figured out) - “It’s relevant,” co-creator Roberto Orci said. “It’s a theme marketing came up with that we’ve incorporated into the show. But the order of the symbols at the end of the show does mean something. There is a secret code.”

  • Producers revealed that Fox tried to get The Observer to stand at Barack Obama’s inauguration as a publicity stunt, but couldn’t pull it off.

  • Jackson called his character a “release valve” for tensions in the show. “I don’t think he is a moral person. But because he’s amoral he’s able to stand aback and note when people are acting immoral. I don’t think he’s particularly concerned, but he’s the one that points it out.”

  • Abrams on the importance of Jackson’s character and convincing the audience to buy in to the reality of the show: “I think was an audience you want to go the crazy place, that insane and impossible place and see the dinosaurs. And you have to have the voice of the audience [Jackson's character] … to comment on the absurdity … once you comment on the absurdity you can have the absurdity.”

  • Regarding the American Idol lead-in, producers express their gratitude for the reality hit’s lead in, though one panelist joked, "there can be no good without evil."

  • On what is the function of the cow in Walter Bishop’s lab, producers suggest its just a funky choice of set design, though one notes: "We did talk about doing an episode where there’s a voice over and we wouldn’t show who it is [talking]. And then at the end of the episode the camera pans over to the cow and it says, ‘Thanks for watching ‘Fringe.’ "

Spoiler Roundup for April 24 – Heroes, LOST, Grey’s & More

    Heroes:

I’ve heard that Heroes‘ Volume 4 ends with a major death. Any tease? — Eric
TV Guide’s Tim: You’re half-right. Of course, not everyone who dies stays dead. Except those who do. Also, look for one character to make a splashy return in Volume 5.

Brian in San Diego: Any scoop on who is the death that sticks in the season finale of Heroes?
    E! Online:
Sources confirm to us that the Heroes death that sticks is male, and he’s someone you’ve definitely come to know quite well since season one. In many ways, the killer also dies, but you’ll just have to wait until next week to understand what that means.

Question: Please, please, please give us a hint about whom Sylar kills in Monday’s Heroes season finale! –Claire
    Ausiello:
It’s a major character, and the death definitely sticks. But there is a twist. (Hint: It’s possible no one will be leaving the show.) BTW, the finale is fantastic. It’s compelling, suspense-filled and, most importantly, events occur consecutively and in the present day. Heroes is back, people!

Fringe, LOST, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy and Pushing Daisies behind the cut!
